Mobility scooter hire is now live at Liberation Station in St Helier

Project

Mobility scooter hire is now live at Liberation Station, the bus station in St Helier, Jersey. We’ve delivered it together with Shopmobility Jersey, the Government of Jersey’s Disability and Inclusion team, LibertyBus and Electric Mobility, and it runs on our connected hire platform.

BBC News covered the launch, Automated mobility scooters trial in Jersey, as did Channel Eye, Mobility scooter trial begins at Liberation Station.

Shopmobility Jersey lends mobility scooters to people with limited mobility so they can get around town. Until now, scooters were collected from its base in Sand Street. With scooters now available at Liberation Station, people arriving by bus can collect one where they get off and carry on into St Helier.

Who can use the service

The service is for Islanders who find it hard to get into St Helier, and for visitors who need mobility support during their stay but can’t bring their own scooter. Mobility scooters are legally classed as invalid carriages, so they may only be used by disabled people, whether the disability is permanent or temporary.

The technology behind it

Every booking, payment and customer record runs on our connected hire platform, and the scooters carry our 4G trackers, so Shopmobility’s staff can see on a live map where each one is and how much charge it has left. The same tracker works on mobility scooters and e-bikes, and the platform was built from the start for many operators, each with its own customers, branding and prices.

Thank you

Our thanks to the Government of Jersey’s Disability and Inclusion team, LibertyBus, Electric Mobility and the team at Shopmobility Jersey for making it happen.

Scooter or e-bike hire for other operators

The same trackers and hire platform are available to any business or scheme that hires out mobility scooters or e-bikes, from a community scheme to a tourist hire business. Read about connected hire, GPS tracking for scooters and e-bikes and the case study, or get in touch to see it in action.
