The challenge
The Digital Jersey Hub is Jersey’s technology and innovation centre: meeting rooms, desks, a café, event space and gardens, used by a changing community of businesses every day. Digital Jersey wanted to know how the building was really being used and how healthy it was, without walking round it, and to be told straight away when something went wrong.
What we did
We designed, installed and run the DJ SmartHub, a smart building platform that turns the Hub into a building that can tell you how it is feeling.
| Sensors | How many | What they measure |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor environment | 17 | Temperature, humidity, CO₂, light, noise and pressure in every named room, every five minutes |
| People counters | 14 | Footfall in and out through doorways, for live occupancy by zone |
| Desk occupancy | 18 | Whether each desk is in use |
| Door and window | 10 | Open or closed, for security and heating waste |
| Water meter | 1 | Consumption plus 13 alert flags, including leak, burst, reverse flow and tamper |
| Current sensors | 5 | Electrical load at key points in the building |
| Soil sensors | 25+ | Moisture, temperature and conductivity across the gardens |
- One network, one platform. The LoRaWAN sensors report through our LoRaWAN network core and MQTT into Home Assistant, alongside the cloud-connected room sensors.
- Air quality scores for every room, calculated from temperature, humidity and CO₂, so building managers can see at a glance whether a room is comfortable, stuffy or needs more ventilation.
- Automatic alerts. A water leak sends a styled email to the facilities manager with a link to the dashboard, and a second one when it’s resolved.
- Remote control. People counters are reset over the air with LoRaWAN downlink commands.
- History and trends in time-series databases and Grafana dashboards: how CO₂ in a meeting room rises through the day, which desks are really used, and footfall by day, week and month.
The result
Digital Jersey can see the condition and use of its building live and over time. Room comfort, space planning, cleaning and energy decisions are now based on data, and leaks are caught as they happen. The same building blocks work for any office, school or public building.
