The challenge
Radon is normally checked with a passive detector left in a room for three months and then posted to a laboratory. Property owners and employers in high-radon areas wanted continuous readings: whether levels rise overnight, whether ventilation or remediation has worked, and which rooms need action, without changing batteries in hundreds of homes and workplaces.
What we did
- Specified the product. A plug-in, mains-powered LoRaWAN radon monitor, so it can report frequently for years with no battery changes.
- Developed it with a manufacturing partner, from prototype to production design, with acceptance tests covering measurement accuracy, LoRaWAN join and confirmed uplinks, continuous mains operation and firmware.
- Designed for certification: CE marking under the Radio Equipment Directive, UKCA for Great Britain, the ISO 11665 radon measurement standards, and LoRa Alliance certification.
- Wrote the integration guide and payload decoders for the main LoRaWAN network servers, ChirpStack v4, The Things Network and Helium, so the monitor works on any network.
- Long-term averaging and placement guidance, so short-term readings are interpreted correctly against annual action levels.
- Dashboards and alerts on our platform, with live readings, history and threshold alerts.
The result
A finished radon monitor that plugs in, joins any LoRaWAN network and reports radon in Bq/m³ around the clock. It is available to order now, on its own or with network connectivity, dashboards and alerts. Order radon monitors or ask us about a trial. See radon monitoring and sensor and device development.
