A housing provider

Estate-wide LoRaWAN network for a housing provider

Site surveys, gateway placement design and a managed LoRaWAN network carrying compliance sensors across a large residential estate.

The challenge

A housing provider wanted continuous compliance data from its homes: emergency lighting, damp and mould, fire safety and more. It needed one reliable network reaching every building, including stairwells, basements and plant rooms, without relying on residents’ Wi-Fi or a separate mobile contract for every sensor.

What we did

  • Site surveys of every scheme, recording roof access, power, mounting points, line of sight and existing coverage, with photographs and positions for each candidate gateway site.
  • Gateway placement design using RF planning parameters to reach every block with overlap, so a single gateway failure does not leave homes without coverage.
  • A hardware standard: carrier-grade outdoor gateways rated IP67, and indoor gateways where needed, all with cellular backhaul so the network does not depend on site broadband.
  • Device onboarding and decoders for the sensor types in use, with data forwarded to the provider’s systems.
  • A managed service covering gateway monitoring, alerting, maintenance and support under a service-level agreement.

The result

A single, monitored network designed to carry sensors for the whole estate, and a model that grows with it: new compliance sensors join the same network instead of each needing its own connectivity.
