Smart home infrastructure design for a new home

Floor-by-floor infrastructure design for a smart home, from the network rack in the basement to local voice control, before the walls go up.

The challenge

The owners of a home under construction wanted it to be smart from day one, without being locked into one manufacturer’s cloud, and wanted the cabling and equipment in place before the walls were closed.

What we did

  • Captured the requirements and set design principles: local control first, privacy, reliability and room to grow.
  • Planned the infrastructure floor by floor on the architect’s drawings, from the basement server rack and network layout to access points, cameras and sensors on each floor.
  • Designed local voice assistants that work without sending recordings to the cloud.
  • Specified Home Assistant as the single platform tying lighting, heating, security and entertainment together.

The result

A home designed for smart technology from the start, so installation is straightforward and future changes don’t mean chasing cables through finished walls. See smart homes and buildings.
