The challenge
An electricity utility is responsible for a large number of buildings and sites across the island. After a series of internal proofs of concept, it wanted to move sensors into a “business as usual” IoT platform that would help manage those properties day to day.
What we did
- Options and proposal. Set out the choices for devices (buy off the shelf or tender), connectivity (operator network, our LoRaWAN core or a private network) and software, with the cost of each.
- Gateways on our LoRaWAN core, carrying temperature and humidity sensors that report every 20 minutes.
- Monitoring dashboards in Grafana for the sites being watched.
- Incident management. When a damaged gateway antenna corrupted frame counters and interrupted the dashboards, we handled it as a priority-one incident: the root cause found and fixed the same day, and a formal incident report with recommendations delivered afterwards.
- Metering research. Supported research into retrofitting real-time IoT connectivity to existing smart electricity meters, so readings could flow into the utility’s data platform and customer app.
The result
Reliable environmental data from the utility’s properties on a monitored network, with a support process that treats an outage as seriously as the utility does.
