The requirement

The HSE Approved Code of Practice L8 and its guidance HSG274 require duty holders to control legionella risk in water systems. In practice that means hot water stored at 60 °C or above and reaching outlets at 50 °C or above (55 °C in healthcare premises), cold water kept below 20 °C, little-used outlets flushed regularly, and records of all of it. Most sites do this with monthly thermometer checks, which miss everything in between.

Our approach

Temperature sensors on outlets, calorifiers, tanks and distribution runs send readings every few minutes. You get:

  • alerts when any point drifts outside its safe band;
  • evidence that sentinel outlets reach temperature within the required time;
  • reminders for little-used outlets that need flushing;
  • monthly records ready for your water safety log.

Where outlets are little used, remotely controlled valves can flush them automatically on a schedule, with flow and temperature sensors confirming each flush worked, and the record logged. Chlorine and other water quality sensors can be added where the water treatment needs watching too.

The sensors clamp onto pipework without draining the system, so installation is quick and causes no disruption to residents, guests or patients.

Devices we use

  • Pipe-clamp temperature sensors
  • Dual-probe temperature sensors
  • Outlet temperature and flow sensors

We work with certified devices from many makers and choose the right one for each building. See the hardware we work with.
